Please ensure you read all of the house rules section of our listing before requesting to book, as this is an Airbnb requirement. Please note that our cottage in addition to being older and historic, also follows the old school ways of the Outer Banks and is BYOL (bring your own bed linens, towels, pillows, shampoo). So please plan on bringing these items with you when you come as the beds will only have a mattress cover on them. Please note that if you bring a well-behaved dog, there is an additional $75 fee (per dog), and dogs are not allowed on the 2 blue couches. Serendipity cottage is an important piece of Outer Banks history. This cottage used to be the station keeper's house for Kitty Hawk Life Saving Station #7. It served as the living quarters for the station keeper and is located right on the Beach Road in Kitty Hawk, NC between milepost 4.0 and 4.5. It is the perfect place if you are looking to relax and have a classic Outer Banks beach house experience. With this cottage, you are just steps away from the ocean....beach access is about a 200 foot walk to the corner! We have very quiet neighbors to the left, right, and behind us. The cottage has a master bedroom with master bath, and an additional bedroom to spread out if you like. There is plenty of extra spaces to hang-out....on the rooftop deck, the front deck, the back deck, the screened sun-porch, the back yard, or under the cottage. There is also an outdoor shower with hot/cold water (Spring to Fall only), washer and dryer, fully stocked kitchen (fridge, oven, microwave, dishes, pots, pans, and silverware) to make home-cooked meals as well as Nutri-Bullet for cold drinks and a Keurig coffee maker. We also have a laundry room with washer and dryer available for your use. This is a very comfortable beach cottage with amazing views of the ocean. Our cottage has vintage and unique furnishings, as well as more modern amenities such as 2 flat-screen TVs, 2 DVD players, cable, WiFi, and a retro Atari game system. Nautical and beach decor is located throughout the cottage, and you will notice that there are books, board games and puzzles in just about every room and corner...including a few Rubik's cubes laying around! The main room also has a large collection of DVDs for your viewing pleasure. Many of the guests who stay at this cottage have been been coming for over 20+ years, and many of them say that they love the "comfortable feeling" as well as how close the cottage is to the beach and the ocean views. If there is only one thing you do if you stay with us.....we highly recommend you get up early, grab some coffee or tea, and watch the sunrise over the ocean from the rooftop deck. It is a memory not soon to be forgotten. We also have a completely fenced-in backyard and well-behaved dogs are allowed on a case-by-case basis. Sorry, no cats. There will be an additional $75 fee per dog to have a dog stay that will be requested via AirBnB prior to your stay. Please watch over your dog at all times so that they are safe and will not get into anything or destroy furniture or bedding. Also you will be responsible to pick-up after your dog, or pay for any damage done to the home or furnishings by your dog. We also have a small shed that has beach chairs, a beach umbrella, and assorted beach toys. Please feel free to use them during your stay! Please note that when you book your stay with us, you will receive a Rental Agreement that outlines the house rules in this AirBnB listing, and also indicates that if there is a mandatory evacuation of the island that the guest will receive a refund for any days that they could not use due to the evacuation.
House Rules
By submitting a reservation request or using Instant Book, you confirm that you, and all members of your party or anyone accompanying you, have read, understand, and agree to abide by all House Rules listed below. You will also be required to eSign our rental agreement, which applies to both you and all guests in your group. Your stay is subject to full compliance with both the House Rules and the rental agreement. Rental Agreement Required All guests are required to e-sign our rental agreement within 5 days of booking. Please provide your email so we can send it to you. If you’d like to review the agreement before booking, just send us an inquiry. Your reservation is contingent on completing the rental agreement within 5 days of your booking date. If the guest does not provide the signed rental agreement back within 5 days of booking, their reservation will be cancelled. Booking Requirements To have your booking approved, your Airbnb profile must include a clear photo showing your face, along with a verified email, phone number, and government-issued ID. The minimum age to book is 25. We also require at least one 5-star review from a prior host. Bring Your Own Linens Guests are required to bring their own bed linens, pillows, bath towels, beach towels, and blankets. The home contains two queen-sized beds. Travel Insurance Recommendation We strongly encourage all guests to purchase travel insurance to protect their trip. Our reservation follows Airbnb’s selected cancellation policy, and we are unable to offer refunds outside of that policy for circumstances beyond our control, including weather events, flight delays or cancellations, road closures, illness, or other travel disruptions. Security Camera There is one camera mounted in the carport area facing the driveway. It records video only (no audio). Occupancy & Visitors Maximum occupancy is limited to two people total, including infants and children. Additional guests or unregistered visitors are not allowed under any circumstances. If more than two people arrive or are found to be staying, the reservation will be canceled without refund. Children & Safety The house is not suitable for children or infants. There are stairs, window blind cords, electrical outlets, a rooftop deck, and a closed-off loft. If you choose to bring a child, you assume full responsibility for their supervision and safety at all times. Restricted Areas: Roof, Loft, Owner's Closet The rooftop area beyond the top deck is strictly off-limits. Guests are not permitted to access or attempt to access the roof under any circumstances. The loft is also off-limits to all guests and may not be accessed at any time. The locked Owner's closet in the utility room is also off-limits. Check-In & Check-Out Times Check-in begins at 3:00 PM Eastern Time. Early arrivals are not permitted without prior written approval and may result in cancellation of your reservation without refund. Check-out is by 10:00 AM Eastern Time. Late check-outs may result in fees or claims per the rental agreement. Pets Dogs are allowed only with prior approval and a $75 fee per dog. Dogs are NOT permitted on the 2 blue couches in the main room. You must pick up all waste from your pet around the property/yard prior to departure. Failure to do so will result in a $250 damage claim to have our cleaner come and clean up after your pet. Smoking, Fires, and Prohibited Items Smoking and vaping are not allowed indoors. If evidence of smoking is found, a $500 deep-cleaning fee will be charged. Campfires, bonfires, candles, portable fire pits, portable grills, and fireworks are not permitted anywhere on the property. Propane Grill Use Guests are welcome to use the propane grill, but it must never be left unattended. Please clean the grill after it has cooled. Plumbing Etiquette Only toilet paper may be flushed. Do not flush wipes, feminine hygiene products, paper towels, or anything else, as this can damage the plumbing system. Quiet Hours & Noise Please be respectful of the surrounding neighborhood. Loud music, parties, or disruptive behavior are not permitted at any time. No Refunds for Inconveniences This cottage is located in a coastal environment where guests should expect exposure to sand, salt air, seaweed, humidity, and occasional insects. No refunds or discounts will be issued for wildlife sightings, pests (even with regular pest control), outages of power, internet, water, or cable, odors or natural scents, weather or road conditions, local noise, allergens, or changes to amenities due to maintenance. We do our best to respond quickly to issues, but these events are beyond our control and not grounds for refund or concession. Maintenance & Emergencies We make every effort to ensure the home and its amenities are in good working order. Please report any issues as soon as they arise so we can assist. In the rare event that emergency maintenance is required, we may need access to the home during your stay. If the home becomes unsafe or uninhabitable, you may be asked to vacate early. In such cases, a partial refund may be issued at our discretion. Disrespectful behavior toward maintenance personnel will result in cancellation of your reservation without refund. Chargebacks & Payment Disputes By booking, you agree not to initiate any chargebacks or payment disputes for your stay. Any concerns must be brought to our attention directly. If a chargeback is filed in violation of this agreement, you will be responsible for all legal, administrative, and processing costs we incur to reverse the chargeback. Liability & Indemnification Guests accept all risks associated with staying at the property and release the owners from any liability for injury, loss, or damage to persons or property. This includes use of the stairs, rooftop deck, outdoor spaces, and all indoor amenities. Early Departures & Cancellations If you choose to leave early, this will be considered a cancellation. The standard cancellation policy that was in place at the time of your booking will apply. Trash & Personal Belongings Guests may only dispose of household trash generated during their stay. The disposal of personal items such as luggage, furniture, appliances, or other large/broken belongings is strictly prohibited. Any unauthorized dumping of personal items will result in an additional fee that you agree to pay after checkout of $75 per item so we can dispose of it properly. Final Note Our cottage is not for everyone. This is a clean, charming, and historic Outer Banks beach cottage, full of character and soul. However, it is over 70 years old. If you're looking for pristine finishes, granite countertops, spotless perfection, or modern luxury, this may not be the right home for you. But if you’re looking for a unique, peaceful, and nostalgic Outer Banks experience in a one-of-a-kind cottage near the beach, we believe you’ll love it here as much as we do. This is a older Outer Banks home and used to be the station keeper's house for Kitty Hawk Life Saving Station #7. It served as the living quarters for the station keeper and personnel and for many years was simply known as "The Station Keeper's House". In 1992 the owners changed its named to "Serendipity" and is has been called that ever since. Please note that as this is an older home, and many of the doorways are low. The master bedroom is a pretty decent size, but the other bedrooms are relatively small. There are no closets in any of the bedrooms, but there are dressers and areas to hang clothes. You will find that you live out on the decks when it is warm, or in the enclosed sun porch when it's rainy. Please Note: We love our cottage, but like any home or place you stay at...it will not be right for everyone. The cottage is 70+ years old, very clean, full of character, comfort, charm, and history. However, if you are looking for everything to be absolutely perfect, no imperfections anywhere, granite counter tops, and bamboo hardwood floors....then this home would probably not be a good fit for you. Our home is a clean, comfortable, and classic OBX beach cottage. If your looking to stay in a unique cottage, in a great beach town, and have a classic Outer Banks beach vacation experience....then this is the cottage for you.

Neighborhood
We are located on Beach Road between mile marker 4.0 and 4.5 in Kitty Hawk. You can't beat the beach view and how close the ocean is! Access to the beach is via the beach access point which is about 200 feet down the road. During the busier summer months you can sit out on the front deck and people-watch as cars and bikes go down beach road. There are year-round Outer Banks residents to the left, right, and behind our house and it is relatively quiet. On summer nights you can sometimes hear soft music being played from Hurricane Mo's (restaurant) which is about a 5 minute walk from the house, and it stops playing by 10:00pm. Another 5 minute walk from the house is another great restaurant called The Black Pelican. The house is walking distance to great restaurants, and a short driving distance to other restaurants, attractions, shopping, and all the the Outer Banks has to offer.

The whole house, sun porch, decks, under the house, and backyard are yours....and the beach is right in front of the house. Beach access is about 200 feet from the driveway.

Just steps from the beach! The beach and ocean are right in front of the house, and beach access is about 200 feet at the corner! Walking distance to two great restaurants (Black Pelican and Hurricane Mo's), and 7-Eleven. Taxis/Ubers are very cheap in the Outer Banks.
